Fall Decorating Giveaway

But before we tackle Christmas, let me ask you. What does fall look like around your house?

Our table, complete with the pumpkin made from nylons that Mitch crafted in his first grade homeschool academy.

Have you visited a pumpkin patch? Brought in some fall leaves? Scattered gourds in a basket or mini-pumpkins in a bowl?

Found the Happy Harvest sign on clearance at TJ Maxx. (I love that place!) and the basket of Indian corn and gourds is from our local farmer’s market.

Farmer’s markets are also great places to pick up fall mums that will stay looking colorful even during fall frosts. Here are some I grabbed the other day at a local one for only $8!

Tell us today what fall decorating you do around your house. You could win the following:

~ Three decorative signs to spruce up your home. They say Faith, Hope & Love.

~Some Godiva chocolate truffles in ice cream shoppe flavors.

~A signed copy of my book A Life That Says Welcome: Simple Ways to Open Your Heart & Home to Others. It has tons of tips for decorating on a shoe-string budget and using items in fall to make your home cozy.

So tell us….what is fall like at your place?

I printed off a free printable I found on a blog that was subway art. It is a brown background with fall words such as pumkin, cinnamon, scarecrows, giving thanks (you get the picture) in white and orange. I put in in a simple black frame I already had, set it up on my bar with a fake, sparkly pumking, gourd, and fall leaf candy dish that I got from the dollar store! I also replaced my regular center piece on my kitchen table with a small pot of mums. Not much, but it does the trick for under $20!:)

I love fall! I love the foods, the smells, and the decorating! We also try very hard to stay on budget, so decorating is on a minimal spend. We put mums in the front yard (2 gallon pots purchased for $3 at the grocery store and GORGEOUS!), get pumpkins from a local farmer, and we grow our own mini pumpkins. I have a tote of fall decorations, which I try to add to each year at the post-season sales. I like to change what’s on our mantle depending on the season/holiday. Love your ideas and would love to see more – always looking for ideas that make your house welcoming without busting the budget!

Inside I don’t have too many decorations… I love the idea of decorating, but I don’t really know where to start. Little scarecrows, gourds, hand made crafts- that’s pretty much the extent. I really need help in that department! Ha ha ha

Somewhere along the line, most of the rest of the world got the Decorating Chip implanted into their brains, and I seem to have missed that step on the Road to Womanhood. I don’t decorate, beyond a couple vases of artificial flowers that I change with the seasons. I wish I were creative enough to come up with more.

I collect glass/crystal candleholders but usually in just singles that have had their match broken so they are all from second hand stores. I just decorated all of them with leaves, pumpkins and gourds from Joann fabrics along with orange candles in a variety of sizes. (I also decorate them with vintage Christmas balls for Christmas.) Outside my front door I have three small mums in different colors, a small bale of hay, pumpkins and an antique rake which I also picked up very inexpensively at a second hand store.

Lots of leaves, gourds, and pumpkins. I always have to have an apple or cinnamon candles burning too. Fall is a beautiful season and I love the colors and smells. I also love your book A Life that says Welcome. I have checked it out numerous times from the library for encouragement and ideas. It has been a blessing. I also love your ideas for fall in your book Homespun Memories from the Heart too. I had to buy a copy of this I love it so. I am getting ready to do some of the harvest things with the kids…the donuts are a autumn favorite too! Blessings.

I love the colors of fall! I string Fall leaves on the mirror above my mantel and set out the cutest pilgrims and indians my son made in Kindergarten (he is 17 now). There is always a bowl full of dry roasted peanuts and candy corn that has to be refilled often or moved away from my husband’s favorite chair. Pumpkin spice candles and cinnamon scented pinecones. I love fall even if it is still 80 degrees in Texas

I haven’t thought of fall decor; between a very tight budget, grad school, a toddler, and third trimester pregnancy, there isn’t a lot of opportunity to decorate.

I did buy a “Give us our daily bread” bread basket from Family Christian stores on sale last Fall but we keep our bread in that all year around :) They have a few things on sale (small pumpkins with scripture etc) so if the budget allows and God says yes, I may buy a couple of things and put them around our bread basket on our dining table.

Amy~I love the idea of Fall leaves; I may do a few of those around the table too!

The centerpiece of my dining table is an antique dough bowl that belonged to my mother in law’s grandmother. An extra large candle is placed in the center with pumpkins, wooden balls, wooden acorns and cinnamon sticks are tucked around the candle. The dough bowl is placed on top of a fall table runner. I have a wooden wine box that is filled with autumn flowers and berries sitting in my kitchen window and whimsical pumpkins scattered around the kitchen area. A colorful fall leaf wreath is on the front door and my candle warmer has the smell of baked cookies.

After the summertime fun it is nice to unwind with the season of fall. Out come the decorations of pumpkins, leaves, homemade craft projects from the kids, scarecrows, and decorating a harvest tree. The tree consist of candy corn garland, homemade ornaments from items we found outside (leaves, acorns, twigs) and ornaments that say what we are grateful for. It is a time of Thanksgiving :)

Ahhh . . . I thank God for cool and moist mornings!! I’m in love with Fall!! I make a Fall tablescape in the picture window of our kitchen of acorns (from our trees) and other nic-nacs I’ve collected that are acorn/leaf/pumpkin shaped Our front door is draped with my favorite Fall lighted garland–the lights race around in yellow/orange/red. Plantings from the seeds of my roasted Kabocha are ready to transplant to our amended flower beds to grow and grow all the way around our house from the front to the back. I even pin my beloved Autumn leaves hankie to my shirt with an acorn pin the minute it starts to turn cold in North Texas and I run around saying “It’s Fall Ya’ll!!!!”

The fall wildflowers in bloom, acorns and nuts, fallen leaves in an array of blazing colors. If I had more time I’d make even more beautiful things with them! I also love to put out a mailbox “topper” with sparkly ribbon and the fall colored silk flowers!

I don’t decorate so much inside, but outside my husband and I had planted numerous maple trees that show beautifully with their fall leaves of orange, yellow and red. Over the years they have grown and are now fairly big trees. My sister in law brought me a mum, so that adorns my front porch this year.
Inside, I enjoy fragrance, so I have scented candles burning. I also bake, so I have the scent of pumpkins bars wafting throughout my house today.
I have never been a seasonal decorator, but I would love to learn more. Now that I have the time, it could be a pleasant task to undertake.

This time around I’ve replaced a trunk in front of our large window with a scroll work plant stand and arranged crystal candle holders and oil lamps on the buffet.

Entertainment center has a fall scented candle w/a pumpkin topper that says “Give Thanks” and leaves, Front window sill has small scarecrows & gourds and the window has leaves & scarecrow faces that my kids decorated, Front Porch has a little hanging scarecrow and pumpkins from our trip to the pumkin patch.

When I lived far from my midwestern roots, I bought colorful garlands of fall leaves to decorate my home. Even though I am back in my home state, I still love to decorate for fall. I love to add pumpkins and gourds, both real and life-like, little scarecrows in my potted plants and autumn wreaths. I add Halloween decorations later in October, then remove them for Thanksgiving and leave the fall decorations up until I start Christmas decorating.

It’s so fun to decorate and add some new temporary color to the home. It’s so funny you posted this today, ’cause that’s what I am doing today – decorating with my fall leaves and some Halloween decorations.

I would love to win the prizes. The signs are sweet, the chocolates heavenly, and I would LOVE a copy of your book. Thanks for the chance to win!

To that we add a growing collection of leaves that my little ones find on our walks, and scatter the,m around the pumpkins. I have an fragrance warmer that spreads the smell of apple cinnamon throughout the house and I love to turn on Josh Groban’s song “Thankful” to complete the cozy feeling.

I just spent a whopping $3 on discounted pieces to spruce up my Fall wreath. Looks great, and kept me from parting with $85 for one I had seen at a local florist. :) I added two 50cent fall picks to a glass candle holder, which looks like I bought it at an interior design store. I printed a monogram template of my last initial, & painted it on a real pumpkin. Then I painted a fun design on another pumpkin (with polkadots) to please the kids. I have a few inexpensive fall things for the mantle, my pumpkin spice candle, and a garland ring to go around the base of a large candle globe. It’s just the little touches that come together to signal the season. BUT–my yard needs help!!! I really need color. My flagpole is broken, I have no flowering plants, no scare crows, etc. I need help, and don’t really know how to make it work, while my neighbors’ yards look fantastic. Hmm….

I hang some laminated fall leaves from up north, around mirrors and windows. Maybe I will implement some of the neat ideas that I’ve read in others comments. Thanks for sharing!

I love fall and my mom was an amazing decorator, but sadly I missed out on inheriting that gene. Seeing your beautiful pictures makes me long for a beautiful, well decorated home in honor of her. Yet the only decorating I have done is moving the kids scooters and toys back to the shed and hiding my half dead summer blooms in the backyard! Thank you for the lovely inspiration, I remember hearing you speak at Hearts at Home before your book even came out. I loved you then and now!

Fall is a great time to decorate inside and out. Outside, I have pumpkins, mums and cornstalks. Some of my pumpkins are wooden and some are real. I had wooden pumpkins made for our family that the kids got to paint the faces onto. These are stuck into the ground with a rod each year. Inside, I have fall garlands just about any place that I will later hang greenery for Christmas. I have a crock full of pinecones from all over the U.S., I stuff a few fall leaves in with the pinecones and it looks so cute at the foot of the piano. Plus this fall I quilted 2 wallhangings that have an adorable candy corn character on it to hang on my wall in the kitchen. Would love the giveaway

    Dear Karen,
    via email–
In response to your email today, I use mums to decorate the front of our home. Our daughter gave me a couple of white pumpkins which did not show up as well as I had hoped they would. Do you have any suggestions? I have also decorated the inside of our home with many decorations. In the kitchen and dinning area I made window treatments from fall place mats. Fall is a favorite season of mine and I enjoy the beautiful rich colors.

I love decorating for Fall…because you can put it out in September and can leave it up until you decorate for Christmas!!! I have pumpkins of many shapes, colors and sizes throughout the house and stuffed scarecrows on my stairs and front porch. I also “decorate with scents” using my Scentsy Warmer and such wonderful aromas as: Pumpkin Marshmellow, Pumpkin Roll, and Autumn Stroll.

I love bringing in my fall decorations that have been in storage for almost a year! The candles start burning and the hot chocolate and cider packets get put out on the counter by the coffee pot. This year I want to make a ” Thankful Tree “. It’s been on my heart and mind to do this with our two teenage girls. I am not really that crafty, but I want to look this weekend at making something that can sit on the table .( something branchy looking where we can hang pretty little cards tied with pretty ribbon. We will write on the little cards the things for which we are thankful)!

I have some special decorations for fall that I get out every year. One is a lovely covered candle dish that I inherited from my mother-in-law ~ it’s a beautiful orange color when there’s a candle lit inside! I also have a little wreath that I decorate every year with some fabric leaves, etc. My daughter & I used to decorate it together, but she’s married & off to college far away, so I decorate it with nostalgia now!

I bought a placemat in fall colors on clearance at Kohls for $1. 30. I put small pumpkins on it out of our garden. I put fall leaves in a farmhouse basket in the living room along with decorative pumpkins. Some of the pumpkins have pilgrims on it so I just turn them to the wall until November. I burn apple pie candles and the house smells great. I try to keep a bowl of apples and small pumpkin shaped dishes of candy out, but with 6 grandkids, it’s hard to keep them full!!

I have lots of orange and brown around my house. My mantle has a cornucopia filled with fall leaves, a wooden wick candle, and a pumpkin oil warmer. I have several types of pumpkins on my sofa table: white ceramic, bronze candle holder and a green pumpkin candle. I often include graphics from the Graphics Fairy blog in frames. Of course, there are fall table clothes and pumpkins on the front porch and lots of fall baking.

FALL IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TIMES OF THE YEAR! I LOVE THE COLORS , THE SMELLS NOT TO MENTION THE YUMMY GOODIES WE MAKE ONLY DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR. WE BUY SECOND HAND OR CLEARANCE & DECORATIONS ARE NO EXCEPTION, WE ARE VERY FRUGAL! MY HUSBAND & I RECENTLY OPENED A RESALE SHOP CALLED “THE TREASURE TROVE,” SO I TAKE ITEMS THAT COME IN & WORK WITH THEM. BELIEVE ME I’VE NEVER BEEN SO CREATIVE IN ALL MY LIFE. I love fall! I hang a fall wreath on my front door, and I welcome visitors by decorating my front steps with some pumpkins, and few mums in my favorite fall colors, yellow, and rust. I decorate the dining room table with pretty, little pumpkins of assorted shades of orange, that are set around a cornucopia that is filled with sprays of fall leaves.. Across my living room mantel, I have a fall leaf swag, which has some small, fake, pumpkins in it. In my den above the fireplace, is a grapevine wreath that I wrapped a fall leaf garland around. To give the entire house a warm, fall, atmosphere, I have a candle warmer, and I burn either cinnamon, pumpkin spice or apple scented candles each day.

We create a “Thankful Tree” to hang on our family room wall (brown butcher paper, draw a tree, trace and cut out our handprints for the leaves. Each one in our family writes something or someone they are thankful for on the hands.) I also use wreaths, pumpkins and garlands of leaves that I’ve picked up at after season sales to create the wonderful feel of Fall inside our home.

Loving fall decorations. Still want to get the fall mesh and a Cinderella pumpkin to go on my front porch and steps with the pumpkins already there. Have one of the fall plants with the variegated leaves that I placed below and in front of the fern but on a smaller stand. At the entrance of the stirs up to the porch landing added yellow mums on either side mixed in with what is already there. Keep your mums deadheaded so they will continue to bloom and at the end of season plant them and they will come back. I didn’t get mine done last year and they came back in their pot in the spring. On my mantel have the fall garland and bought a couple of fall looking vases (2 dif. Sizes) at a discount store and added some sticks with small pumpkins attached that I got marked down at Kroger’s. They are in water. Ran off on the computer pictures of my grandchildren in a pumpkin patch and framed. Candy corn on the entry way table in an outdoor bird feeder statuary, that of course came from a discount place many moons ago! Never used outside. The candy product or deco in it changes with the season. Empty now with the corn stowed away so I won’t eat it!! Nuff said!! On my piano in the living room a white ceremic pumpkin made and given to me by a lady in my church in 1983. She has been gone a long time but it is the gift that keeps on giving year after year. On the mantle in my den is also two cream colored battery operated candles, because I am afraid I will not remember to blow real ones out. Also gotten at a discount store. Have containers with small pumpkins gotten through the years. Also in the LR just laid a magazine with pumpkins in it angled on the couch. My Nortike China (Oaklane-has a leaf that is turning!) that I got when I married over 48 years ago is in my china cabinet. Picked up acorns in my back yard with my 3 yr old granddaughter. Placed in a small glass container with a fall scented candle pressed into the middle also on entryway table. Don,t plan to burn it!! Place your decorations in a clear container to store from year to year and add to them at the end of the season when they go on sale.

I ALWAYS keep a pumpkin, cinnamon or apple candle burning to help the home with the smell of fall!! I love to put up my fall Dickens Village houses…complete with pumpkin wagon, fruit stand, and fall trees. The kids and I love to wake up in the morning and have only the little house lights on while we begin our day. So peaceful. All of the houes go on top of our piano in the living room and we enjoy it until after Thanksgiving…when the fall houses/people/trees are replaced with my winter houses/people/trees. It’s also a great time of year to start using the fall scented candles.

Normally by now it would be decorative pumpkins and fall-themed table linens, a fall wreath on the front door, and pumpkin candles throughout. The decorations are buried in the attic due to some redecorating projects. Really need to enlist the help of my terrific hubby to get things out of the attic and placed around the house this weekend. Otherwise, it’ll be time to put the Christmas stuff out!

I posted on facebook the other day about decorating! Here it is, cut and pasted (Megan is six and Katie Rae is ten): Overheard yesterday: Megan: “When are we going to decorate for Halloween?” Katie Rae: “What’s the point? Nobody sees our house anyway?” Megan: “Well, I like to see it.” Katie Rae: “I do, too!” Megan: “So when do you think we’ll decorate?” Katie Rae: “Here’s how it works….Mom will tell Dad it’s time for US to decorate, b/c she doesn’t want to do it all herself. Dad will say, ‘yeah, yeah, yeah, I’ll get around to it.’ Then he will get the box out of the garage the day before Halloween. Mom will say, ‘There’s no reason to do this now.’ Then Dad will say, ‘Of course there is.’ He’ll put up the decorations, and then Mom will want them taken down the day after Halloween. Dad will say he just put them up. He’ll finally take them down when the Christmas stuff comes out.” (My ten year old hit the nail on the head – she is a great observer of human interaction!)

I use a lot of “kid made” decorations. I have three little ones, but even so, we usually only do one “fall art project” near Thanksgiving. This year, they are taking an art class, so we may have more to hang soon! Other than that, not much really…we are “on a shoestring,” and I don’t know much about decorating on one, so I definitely need some inspiration in that area! I do have a flower arrangement with fall colors as my centerpiece…that is the only thing I pull out each year when the calendar says, “First Day of Fall.” :) My sister-in-law made the centerpiece for me!

We are pretty simple –I have pumpkins up, a few scarecrows and a ceramic jack-o-lantern that doesn’t match anything, but is special b/c my gramma made it so it goes up each year.

I don’t have a lot of surfaces to decorate–the house layout isn’t conducive for that–I used that as an opportunity to get rid of a lot of decorations and need to go through my 2 fall boxes again and get ride of decorations I have not used.

Fall at our place is wonderful! We have a small acreage (just moved out here last fall!) and LOVE all the colors and crispness. I love to bake, so the house is usually filled with the wonderful, warm smell of something in the oven :-) We also have a fireplace, so we have the warmth and smell of a fire, which we are enjoying immensely! I don’t have all the “non-essentials” unpacked yet, so not much for decorations up yet, but we’ll get there :-) Happy fall, everyone!

I love the country look so outside I have two mums and two pumpkins on either side of my front porch pillars. I have a large flag to the side of my butterfly bush which says “Harvest Blessings.” The American flag is always hanging on one of my front porch pillars as long as it is not raining. By the side door a small garden flag with a scarecrow picture. By the front door a 3ft scarecrow welcoming guests and on the other sire a 2ft wooden gate with welcome on it and fall/country decorations. My porch table has a wrought iron pumpkin with an orange and yellow berries ring in it.
Inside there are various faux pumpkins, baskets, butterscotch candle, scarecrows, etc. etc.

We don’t do as much decorating for fall as we do for Christmas, but we put tissue paper leaves on the front door and windows in fall colors (I got the idea from here: http://www.frugalfamilyfunblog.com/2011/09/autumn-window-collage.html) We love the way the light shines in on the colors, and my toddler can practice learning his colors!
