When You Just Want to Escape to an Island

Ever wanted to run away? Away from your responsibilities? Away from your screaming schedule? Away to somewhere gorgeous like a tropical island?

I have.

Just last month as I looked over the fall family itinerary and my speaking and longed to take a little break. I have September and October off and then between November 1st-16th I have four speaking engagements requiring me to travel 9 days out of 16! YIKES!}   I wanted so badly to tuck in a little rest. A time of for a mama getaway.

Then, our Proverbs 31 President {and one of the friends I most love hanging out with due to the many hilarious predicaments she gets herself into as well as the chronic condition she has known as Inappropriate Laughter Disorder. That is when you chuckle wildly at the WRONG times, likes while being detained and searched at the security gate!}

Wait. Where was I?

Oh yeah…Lysa called to ask how far I am from Mackinac Island because she is speaking there for four days this week and wanted to know if I could come be her assistant.

8053499948_8542bfa61dHELLO!! My favorite place in Michigan (after Comerica Park–Home of the Detroit Tigers) is that historical setting! Todd and I went there for one night of our honeymoon.

No cars are allowed, only horse-drawn carriages and bicycles. And they are famous for their fudge and the Grand Hotel {where the movie Somewhere in Time was made}.

So, I am headed to assist her, work on some writing and simply walk the beautiful island to re-connect with Jesus for a few days.

Mackinac-Island5Not even a lost school backpack {still not found} and my breaking a tooth late last night {on a “soft” bagel–geesh!} can keep me away. The hubby had some time off work he needed to use up so he’ll be running carpool and chasing down lost backpacks and making his famous grilled chicken for the boys.

It isn’t tropical, but it is an island so I’m just gonna call it good.

I’ll be back at the end of the week.

  1. Karen, I pray you have a wonderful time! I live in such a beautiful place I don’t often wish I coulld run away. I’d love to run away from my broken body but that won’t happen until Jesus calls me home. I think it is so wonderful how God gives us what we need, just when we need it :)
Be blessed and have fun laughing at inappropriate times with Lysa!

  2. Mackinac Island in the fall is amazing. It’s so quiet as it gets ready to close for the winter. I hope you get to stay in the Grand Hotel and get some rest!

  3. Sounds lovely. I grew up in Michigan and moved when I was 19. I have never been to the island, Mackinac City but never the island. For the last 12 years we have been a military family BUT next year we will retire and move back home. (To Michigan! Not with our parents ;-) I told him we HAVE to go to the island as one of our first vacations. Since we can go on a really vacation instead of visitimg family.

  4. Mackinaw Island is a “little piece of Heaven ~ here on earth”. Enjoy your time with Lysa. You will come back renewed and rested.
It has been 30 years since I’ve been there, but I’m sure that it has only gotten better.:)

  5. What a wonderful way to spend a few days away. Love that whole area – Mackinaw City and the island. It’s been too long since we’ve been there. Enjoy your time in the beauty of God’s creation, spending time with its Creator.

  6. WOW! My favorite place in Michigan right after the “OLD” Tiger Stadium. I moved away before the new one was built. Have a great time.

  7. Karen, hope your adventure with Lysa is all that the Lord has planned for you, including resting with Him! Enjoy! God bless!
