LongingInOurHearts

“I had everything I wanted yet felt empty and confused. Although my life was full of relationships and accomplishments I’d worked hard to gain, none could fill or fulfill me.

Frustrated by my aching emptiness, tears streamed down my face as I thought about the guy I dated through high school and college. Our future plans had crumbled under the pressure of me expecting him to be all I needed. I had been crazy about him — a little too crazy.

I’ll never forget the time a friend mentioned my ex-boyfriend was heading to our hometown for the weekend. We worked near each other, so Friday afternoon I parked by his office and waited for him to leave.

We both “happened” to be at the same fast food restaurant, at the same time and bumped into each other. After getting my order, I got in my car and followed behind him, hoping he’d see me, realize he couldn’t live without me and signal to pull over so we could talk.

Seriously, what was I thinking? As you can guess, he never stopped. I was hopeless and humiliated.

A few weeks later, I was taking a walk around my college campus. My eyes drifted to the buildings, dorms and other landmarks of memories. Suddenly my mind filled with a collage of faces, reminding me of my efforts to win the approval of advisors, friends and professors — hoping their affirmation could fill my emptiness.

Although I was graduating soon, had a few great job offers and achieved success in many ways, my heart still felt restless. And I couldn’t help but wonder: Why was all that I had never enough?

A thought rushed through my soul, stringing together two words I had never put next to each other, and I sensed God answering me.

Renee, all you have ever wanted is unconditional love.

Unconditional love? I didn’t know there was such a thing. Then God whispered into my soul: You’ll never find the love you long for in anyone or anything but Me. I AM the unconditional love you’re looking for.

The thought of God loving me without any conditions was inconceivable, yet something deep in my soul told me it was true. I’d been looking for love that didn’t have to be earned. Love I didn’t have to fear losing.

Honestly, it was hard to see how God’s love could fill the emptiness in my heart. It took time, but I came to understand that God created me with a need for fulfillment so He could meet it.

Proverbs 19:22a, says, “What a person desires is unfailing love.” That word “desire” comes from the Hebrew word ta’avah, which means: to greatly long for, deeply desire or crave. Interestingly, unfailing love is mentioned over 30 times in the Bible, and not once is it referencing a person. It is only attributed to God.

God gave us a desire for unfailing love because He knew it would lead us back to Him.

His love draws us to Him. Only we can stop God from reaching the deep and hidden parts within us that need Him most.

Let’s invite Jesus to look into our hearts today so He can show us what, who and where we might be looking to be fulfilled. Then let’s ask Him to fill us with the promise and reality of His unfailing love instead.

When I say… I’ll never be content.

God says… Let My unfailing love satisfy the longings of your heart.

“What a [woman] desires is unfailing love. Proverbs 19:22″

  1. I’m a flight attendant and writer so I’d keep it in my tote bag and have it ready to give to a fellow flight attendant as the Lord leads.
So many dissatisfied, hurting, women in this industry. Thanks for your generous heart. Betsy

    • I relate to your post Betsy – I found it amazing & heartbreaking the number of hurting women in the Inflight industry and was thrilled whenever I was privileged to fly with another believer in Jesus. I tried at the end of every trip to give each flight attendant a LUV note of appreciation and encouragement written on a red heart cut from construction paper along with a piece of wrapped chocolate. I would sign my name and include Psalm 91:4 ….”He will cover you with His feathers and under His wings you will find refuge…” It was a blessing to be a blessing and I was thankful for the opportunities God gave me. God bless you in your ministry in a much needed area. FlyinGramma7

  2. I would give a copy to my dear friend and pastor’s wife and would love to share a devotion with her each day. She is a big hearted, compassionate soul who has had poor health and big struggles over the past few years.

  3. Jennifer D. says:

I have a good friend who I think this would be great for! She is a mom of three little girls and I think this would speak to her.

I would give the copy to one of my best friends :) We love to read and do devotionals together so we can pour into our respected ministries with all that we are learning together.

  5. I would share with my dear friend. We joke that we are married to the same man. Our husbands are so alike and we tend to lean on each other and talk each other through struggles. Even when we don’t talk often a single phone call can change the week for us.

  6. Deborah Heath says:

I have a ministry to the pastor’s wives in our association of churches. I would share one of these with the one of them who struggles with insecurity & self-doubt.

  7. I would give Renee’s devotional book to my adult daughter, who is single and going through a very difficult period of her life. I believe this book would greatly help her!

  8. Melody Byrum says:

I would love this book. And I would give one to a friend of mine who could use it. She has two children and has been going through a lot with inlaws and work. And lately her or her kids have been sick. One right after the other. She could use this.

  9. Barbara Cole says:

I would share the extra copy with my dear friend and sister in Christ who inspires me to persevere against seemingly impossible odds. She has such a strong faith but still struggles in one area of her identity in Christ. How awesome it would be for each of us to go through Renee’s devotional daily and then share what we are hearing from the Lord by text messages and phone calls.

  10. We have new families in our church.the women of these families are so hungry to learn more of God, and to have a closer walk with him. I would give them both to these ladies.

  11. Two copies of this book…what a blessing! I would give one away to a good friend of mine who is going through a very rough time in her life right now. I am praying daily for her and asking my Papa God for words of wisdom for her. I would love to be able to hand her a copy of this book and know that God ordained that moment in time for my hurting friend ;)

  12. I am a huge fan of Renee Swope, having just gone through A Confident Heart with the P31 Online Bible Study. Knowing the depth of this study, and how it impacted my life, I want to read the devotional and share the 2nd copy with my sister-in-law. She is a new believer and has been working through the various books and the Bible to grow closer to God. But whenever we talk, I sense so much fear and anxiety in her heart. She is scared. But I want her to know that God is here, and God has many beautiful promises in his Word that bring comfort, peace, and confidence. Renee’s devotional is a perfect fit for her heart.

  13. I would give Renee’s devotional book to my adult daughter, who is single and going through a very difficult period in her life. We could share the daily devotions and support one another each day.

  14. Nicole Maclauchlan says:

I am an assistant pastor who loves relational ministry! This would be helpful for myself and for all I come in contact with! If I won 2 copies, I would share with a friend who’s dreams for life seem to be unattainable, at the age of 30, and needs to feel confident in the heart God has given her!!!

  15. I so needed to read this today! Thank you! I would give a copy to my sweet friend who is about to become a mother in the next few weeks.

  16. Oh I would share one with my niece who moved away to Oregon. She thinks she has to prove she is mature and grown up. She will always be my little niece. Sometimes we think we have to earn love and reading your post is exactly what I want her to know…

  17. I would give the copy to the mommy of the little boy I babysit for! She is a new mom that is an ER nurse and very busy wife. I love to follow all your blogs and Renee’s blogs. I have learned so much….thank you for sharing.

  18. I did the online bible Study and love this book! I have a friend that is a new Christian and is dealing with a couple of health issues right now that do not seem to be getting any better. This book would be such a blessing to her and help her with find that confidence that God is walking with her through these dark days!

  23. Two books – this is awesome! I would give one to my 30 year old daughter. Thanks for the opportunity.

  24. I would love to give a copy to my dear Mother. Although I see her as a strong woman of God, who has raised her children and even others children, she often can’t find the strength and gets weary at times.

  25. I would give Renee’s devotional book to my adult daughter. Thank you for this opportunity.

  26. I would give one to my life long friend Carrie who is always questioning herself about life, parenting, career choices and friendships. She is beautiful inside and out and I think this would be so wonderful for her. I might get it for her either way.

  27. I did A Confident Heart study last year and got so much out of it. My pastor asked me to take another lady through it.
Going through it again with someone else has been even more helpful to me as well as her. I would give a copy to this lovely lady I’m working with who has been crushed by her abusers

  28. It would be so exciting to win this book! I can hardly wait to read it!! If I win I will share the other copy with my mom who has struggled with insecurities her entire life. My heart hurts for her.

  29. I would love to have this devotional and share with a dear friend who has medical issues. I am excited to read it.

  30. Janet Worthy says:

It will be a tough choice between my three grown daughters, but I think I’d have to pick #2 this time:)

  31. Dede Thies says:

Renee is so incredible and I always feel she is speaking right to me! Every time I feel that there is an area that “I just do not struggle too much in”, I realize after reading her words that I was in TOTAL denial! 38. I’d give a copy to my dear friend, Danni, whom I miss terribly!

  39. I would give a copy to my daughter.

  40. Thank you so much for your generousness. I would give a copy to my cousin who struggles with a lack of confidence and lots of family issues. I think it would help her a lot. I also would love my own copy to read. I struggle to accept and love myself so i think this would be an encouragement to me also. Have a great day!

  41. I’d share one with my stress and anxiety group friends.

  42. I’d give a copy to my sister :)

  43. Honestly, I’d probably use it as a giveaway at one of our church’s women events. The Truth in A Confident Heart is so good. I almost have a difficult time picking which specific friend to choose!

  44. Sandi Colwell says:

    Oooh, one to my mom!

  45. I think I would like to share this one with my Mom who really is one of my best friends!

  46. Renee, your book changed me life….Since the beginning of last year when I did the Confident Heart OBS, I have been on a journey with God that has been amazing. I love your book and I’m so grateful to you for writing it, it is yellowed all over and notes everywhere, I reference back to it for scripture and just parts that I remember and re-read. I would love to share your devotional with my oldest daughter, she is not only my daughter, but also my friend. During her teen years I never would have thought this would ever be possible. But with “God anything is possible”….
    Thank You Karen….. ;o)
    Blessings Anna

  47. Robin Still says:

The beginning of this post sounded like it was me…I have everything that I could wish for but still feel empty sometimes. I would love to read this devotion and begin my day with the positive news that God loves me unconditionally…and that with Him all things are possible. If I was blessed to win 2 copies of this devotion I would share one with my sister in Christ who also feels much like I do…I guess that is why God put us together…to help and lean on each other.

    Wonderful ministry…Blessings to all…

    Smiles & Blessings, Robin :)

  48. I am continually reminded to be humble and content with what God has given my family- yet there are times that I feel constricted by the budget, want to be able to just go away for a weekend and not worry how much it costs and on and on. But I would share with my best friend who seems to be chasing money rather than God and seems very frustrated with life.

  49. I would give the books to two friends—Rachel who is my sister in Christ and prays for me and to Grace, my daughter, who is a newlywed. Thanks for this opportunity to bless someone in my life!

  50. Elaine Segstro says:

I would give it to my cherished friend Trudy.

  51. I would give the other copy to my friend also named Sherry. We have worked together for 10 years and been through terrible divorces and deaths of our parents. We both are rebuilding and I think this book would be great for us.

  52. I would give the second copy to my mom so she would live her life with the knowledge of who she is in the eyes of God.

  53. Our Bible study group is going through this study right now so I would give it to one of the ladies in our group.

  54. I would give a copy of the book to my friend Terri. Her father has Alzheimer’s and she and her siblings are struggling with what to do with him/for him. She’s very stressed and doubting herself right now. I think the book would be a comfort to her. Thank you for the opportunity to win.

  55. uff, that’s a tough one to narrow down on :) …I think one copy I’d give to a friend who over the years over and over again became discouraged in her personal life because of failing love relationships- and perhaps seeing her value and life satisfaction thru a fresh prism of God’s love will serve her as a necessary boost for the daily optimism in life despite her ‘social’ status. Another one, after I read it myself, of course I’d probably give to a close friend of mine who has not made final sole commitment yet to Jesus. I think this kind of real life ‘story-book’ filled with testimonies may give her a new perspective on why our God is the only true God.

  56. Anything positive and uplifting is welcome in my house right now. I have a pre teen daughter who is really going through an emotional time right now. I am fighting hard to not get pulled into the negativity. I am struggling to keep her focused and in a positive mindset. With all of this going on, I am certainly doubting my abilities as a mom!

  57. Karen, I just loved “A Confident Heart” It was my first OBS and what changes happened in my life through the book and the study! I would love to read the devotional! If I won 2 copies, I would give one to my daughter who is beginning her journey in relationship with Jesus! It would be great for her to feel the confidence, to have a confident heart through Christ!

  58. Lack of self-confidence is something that I’ve always struggled with–not being good enough . . . Even through counseling, it is a challenge that I face almost daily inwardly, which is (hopefully) not noticeable to my friends and family. Renee’s P31 Devotionals have spoken to me for many years & I’m sure this book would do the same! I would love a copy for me and for my mom.

  59. Jackie Smith says:

Renee’s writings always speak right to me….and I would love this book!
The second copy would go to a dear friend, former pastor’s wife, who is a special blessing to me.

  60. Cathy McCoy says:

Hi! I linked over from Renee Swopes page. Thanks for sharing. I’m reading A Confident Heart and would love copies of the devotional. I have more than one person I can think of to give a copy to so I can’t narrow it down.

  61. Susan Gruener says:

    Hi Karen,
I love your contributions to Proverbs 31 Ministries – so encouraging! I hopped on over here from Renee’s site. :) I loved Renee’s book, after going through it with our women’s small group bible study. After seeing it online, we knew we had to order it for the group – and we were not disappointed! If I won 2 copies I would give them both away, one to Allison and one to Paula.
    Blessings to you!
    Susan

  62. Susan Smith-Allen says:

I got the e-book FREE on Valentine’s Day and I love it? I hope a lot of people read it. It has a very encouraging message on God’s LOVE and helps on self-doubt. Thanks again!

  63. I am currently leading the confident heart study and this week we talked about Gods unconditional love and the when/then statements. I will be posting them on my refrigerator. I would love to share the devotional with my daughter so that she can be reminded of Gods unconditional love for her. As a new mom, I want her to have as much information on Gods love that she can. Love the book!

  64. I have read Renee’s book 2 times and have had the opportunity to hear her speak. I love her honesty. I would give one of the books to the church libarary.

  65. Thank you for sharing Renee’s blog for her book givaway. I would love so much to have one for my friend and myself. It was my first bible study and I loved it. Then Friday I got the devotional. Awesome!! Heading back to Renee’s blog. Thanks Again!!

  66. Why would I like to receive the book and what friend you’d give it to, if you won 2 copies.

I’d love to receive the books as gifts for the friends I’d give them to -
my 2 Amys ! Daughter and Daughter in Love

Thank you for hosting and for Renee’s generosity for offering =)

  67. Mippy/Sabrina says:

Hi Karen! Renee Swope sent me :)

I am always needing upliftment, ancouragement and positive reinforcement as I feel Satan is always just too close and waiting for one misstep to try to take me down the wrong road. I can use this in the morning, at night or even in the middle of the day, to help thwart his efforts against me. I would share this with my friend’s wife. Satan is working uber hard on both my friend and his wife. I would give it to her because if Momma ain’t happay , ain’t no one happay. And she deserves much happiness. :)
