Welcome to those of you who made your way here after reading my Proverbs 31 Ministries devotion today entitled The $285 Cinnamon Roll. {If you haven’t read this tale of how a $3.29 pastry ended up costing my 16-year-old a whoppin’ $285— and the lesson it teaches us— click here to so.}

Got words? Oh yeah, you do! The average women speaks over 20,000 a day—not to mention the ones she types online. I—being a woman whose words have often landed her in a heap of trouble— share from experience the how’s (and how-not-to’s) of dealing with the tongue in my new book Keep It Shut . Using biblical examples, as well as my own personal (and sometimes painful!) stories, Keep It Shut will equip you to know what to say, how best to say it, and when you’d better just keep your lips zipped!

This book will teach you:

  • The difference between gossip and properly processing with a trusted friend
  • A helpful grid for using our digital tongues as we talk online or on social media
  • How to pause before you pounce, attacking the problem but not the person
  • How to avoid saying something permanently painful just because you are temporarily ticked off
  • What the Bible teaches about making our speech laced with grace, as sweet as honey, and yet seasoned with salt

If you are interested in a free resource based on the topic of this book, I am offering a five day e-mail devotional called 5 Days to Sweet & Salty Speech: 5 People in the Bible. 5 Lessons for our Lips. I figured right before the holiday season was a good time for all of us to have a little encouragement on watching our words!

Each day for five days, starting with the day you sign up, you will receive a short devotional based on a person in the Bible who either use their words properly and we should emulate them, or they used their words poorly and we should avoid such behavior. Well-known characters such as David. But also some who aren’t as readily recognized like Abigail, Boaz, and a man named Mordecai. The final day looks at the words of Nicodemus and Jesus. Each day also has a “Lesson for our Lips” challenge of something to do {or not to do!} with our words.

  1. I am trying so hard to Let it Go…I am not very successful at this. My hubby keeps telling me I need to be more like a duck and just let it roll of my back. I think I need some assistance….Thank you for such an opportunity to enjoy this book. Blessings to you!

    Smiles, Robin :)

  2. Thanks for creating the devotional for us Karen!

    Death and life are in the power of the tongue…. That is not something to take lightly. I have a natural tendency to be a chatterbox. I love connecting with people and communicating with others. I also need to guard my tongue and trust God for His wisdom of when to shut it and when to use it.

  3. I am usually a quiet person but when I get mad or bothered by someone or something it shows! I have tried many things in my own power but have recently have let go and let God since my ideas haven’t worked out so far.

  4. I could really use this book to help me learn to trust God more and let Him do His work in me. I have had to overcome trust issues in many areas of my life and it’s a work in progress! Only with God’s help have I come this far. I also like the new book about learning when to speak and what to say, it’s another area of my life that God tries to work in, but I keep getting in the way! LOL.

  5. I guess I am the odd ball because I usually don’t speak my mind. I am a quiet one & I keep everything hidden inside until I explode. So I really need to read the ones on when to say it & how.

  6. Letting it go is something I still have trouble doing. I recently had to drop a course in my nursing program and it ended up putting me out of the program, to finish I would actually have to take everything again. It’s a very frustrating and disheartening situation, and I’m having a very hard time letting it go :) with prayers and faith, God is getting me through this, and I know He has something else planned for me! I am excited to read Let. It. Go. And Keep it shut, as I have never had a good filter. Thanks for the encouraging words!

  7. Wow sounds like your writing a book just for me. I’ve always been quick on any and all responses and have never had a good filter. I am looking forward to your book.

  8. I am interested in what you say about gossip. I have a trust issue about gossip, not with me but with what i’ve shared with friends or family. Thank you.
