Winderful Home Decor for #LoveYourLifeFriday

Winderful Home Décor by Lynn Cowell for #LoveYourLifeFriday at karenehman.com.

One thing you couldn’t call me when I got married was confident … especially when it came to decorating!

My mom had her taste. (Did anyone else’s mom go to Home Interior parties?) My husband had his too. His leaning toward black lacquer furniture and water beds didn’t sit well with me, yet I didn’t know exactly what I did like. I just knew that the mauve and blue country mini-prints didn’t feel like me.

Today, I still have trouble defining my style, but what I do know for sure is that I love a home that says, “Prop up your feet on my furniture and be comfortable!”

Maybe that is one reason why I like The Nester. Maybe you follow Myquillyn Smith too. I follow the Nester because her style feels like home.

I was so excited to see The Nester post this picture of an old window on her Instagram feed recently.

I’m a bit partial to old windows too! In fact, my husband and I scoop them up when we see them on our antique stops. The more unique the better!

This window was my maiden purchase. On this beauty, I attached a picture of one of my favorite waterfalls in the Blue Ridge Mountains, shot in the fall. It hangs on a large, long wall in our bathroom.

This window my oldest daughter, Mariah, uses to highlight her early photography.

Ideally, windows with color that contrasts against the wall color is best, which is why the next window is my favorite.

This little project Greg and I made for our youngest girl’s apartment. The uniqueness of this window made it perfect for this project.

To make this momento holder, you’ll need:

  • an old window – I usually find them for between $10 – $20 at flea markets or antique stores
  • a hammer – to remove glass if it still has the panes
  • safety glasses
  • chicken wire
  • staple gun
  • needle-nose pliers

Wearing the safety glasses, use the hammer to remove all of the old glass. You’ll then use needle-nose pliers to remove any remaining glass still in the groove. BE VERY CAREFUL!

Cut the amount of chicken wire that you need to cover the back side of the window. We used the needle-nose pliers to cut it to fit. Using the staple gun, staple the chicken wire to the frame.

That’s it! Using clothes pins, show off your favorite pictures, postcards, or drawings. You could even decorate it according to the holiday season!

However you choose to decor your home, the most important thing is to not allow your lack of confidence to hold you back from expressing yourself in your space. It’s not a place for comparison or competition or a stage for the perfect social media picture. Your home is your home; your place to create the type of space that makes you and those you love want to rest and enjoy making wonderful memories together.

P.S. Speaking of confidence, I’d love to have you join me for 5 Days to Unshakable Confidence, a free challenge starting Monday, October 30!
