Weighing In….

Last May I posted a series on weight loss. God used it to prick the hearts of some gals who wanted to begin to take control of their eating and exercise habits before it did them in. Many of you have contacted me wanting to check in with each other on how it is going. So let’s check in….

Have you lost any weight? Stuck to an exercise routine? Passed up the fattening stuff and opted for fruit instead? Memorized any scriptures that have helped you on this journey? Or, have you started and then blown it and want to hop back on the bandwagon again? Or what is your greatest challenge when it comes to this area?

As for me, I have begun to re-quote often to myself a verse I memorized early on. It is First Corinthians 10:13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

I needed that last weekend when I was at the Hearts at Home moms’ conference, surrounded by all things chocolate! I need it now that I am home and trying to get caught up and have operated all week without a fridge. (The new one just got up and running last night) Without planning ahead what healthy foods I will eat, I just grab whatever is in sight. And, my biggest downfall, whatever sounds good. I’ve been doing this for over a month now. And I have been letting the temptation to skip working out, even if it is taking a brisk walk for twenty minutes around my subdivision, take over me. Needless to say, I have let nearly 10 of the over 100 pounds I have lost creep back on. Time to get serious!

So, today I find myself in need of a little encouragement. Comments anyone? Let’s spur one another on toward health and fight the fat together!!!

One-too-many-sweets-blessings,

Karen

  1. Hi Karen

Good idea to keep revisiting this topic.

I commented earlier in the year about how God had spoken to me through reading your devotions and blog about losing weight. I am now pleased to report that I have lost 16 kilos!! I feel more confident and like my body is better able to do the things that I want it to do. I still have a lot more to lose (not halfway there yet) but if I feel good now then I can’t wait to see how much better I will feel when I get to my goal weight!

This verse was in my quiet time recently and really spoke to me about losing weight and overcoming our ongoing battle with food…

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
    1 Peter 5:8-10

I love the promise in this verse, to be made strong, firm and steadfast if we can suffer for ‘a little while’.

    Happy weight-loss!

  2. Karen..my Godly good friend and co-worker, has
suggested we offer your pray and weigh in our
church and community. So, here I am checking you
out. What a great web site and idea. Got to get back
to reading but I am excited! (I have lost 65 lbs, in
the last year and am “working” to keep it off.) Using
God’s word to keep me strong, it is a win-win
Thank you for sharing your love of God and your
    experiences.

  3. Hello-
I’ve commented before about weight loss on your site, Karen. Anyway, I’m glad that you come back to this topic as it’s close to my heart. I’ve lost about 40+lbs and kept it off over 2 yrs. now. Allow yourself to eat what you love. Yes, I mean chocolate or whatever it is that you’re craving. In fact, it’s NOT a good thing if you never allow yourself to have what you really love. I’ve found many ways to “tweak” a recipe to make it healthier, but hey, sometimes we all just want the full-fat version!….and that’s ok!!
What I try to do is keep my caloric intake to about 1500-1600 calories a day. Do I ever go over?-sure, but I’m also very active! Just make sure that your caloric intake is the right one for you! One of the main ways I stay sane is to allow myself to have a treat daily! Here’s the trick: use the SERVING SIZE!! If the ice cream seving is 1/2 cup, then physically take out a measuring cup and measure your ice cream….don’t “eyeball it”.
I just know each one of you can do it….I did but it’s a daily commitment to keep at it.

  4. Hi Karen! I love your blog! After reading your blog in May, I felt God leading me to go back to Weight Watchers and I’ve lost 35 pounds! I’m down several sizes of clothes and my feet and knees are much happier. I have a long way to go, but I’m turning to God instead of the fridge this time. Thank you for the Bible verse today – I used to have that one memorized, but had forgotten it.
    Your sister in Christ,
    Jody
PS – I live in Michigan too!

  5. Sista’ Lisa–
Well, we find ourselves in the same boat. Let’s each grab an oar and keep rowing! I’ll call you sometime soon.
    Love ya,
    Karen

  6. Hi Karen!

This is my first time at your site. I had another great weekend at the Hearts At Home Convention and am currently reading your book on organization. I thought I’d pop by and peek at your site. It sounds like you’re having the same kind of week I am with food! Thank you so much for the scripture verse. It’s exactly what I needed today! I WILL get back out there and exercise. I’ve always found that nothing helps control my cravings like regular exercising (walking in my case).

    Anyways, thanks again!
    Your Canadian friend,
    Sandra

  7. Hi Karen,
I have lost 10 pounds so far but now have been stuck at the same weight for a month. My eating habits have gotten sloppy but since I am still exercising I haven’t gained. I would like to get back on track with my eating but just can’t seem to get motivated and now, since its cooler outside there seems to be a lot more temptation like baked goods.

I know we all can get back on track it we set our minds to it. We have to plan our meals and make time for exercise. We are worth it.

  8. Hi Karen…

I am in getting back in the swing of keeping track of my Weight Watchers points. I too have gained back some of what I lost.

But for some reason this second go round isn’t going as quickly as the first time I did WW???

    Let’s hold each other accountable!

    Love you sista’!!!

  9. Since reading your blog in May I started a weight loss program with 4 other women. They my mom, sister, aunt and cousin. Since June 18th we have lost over 90 lbs! We meet once a week and weigh in together and record the weight. We spend 30 minutes or so chatting and going over our lows and highs of the week.

We are getting to a plataue and I am really praying that God will motivate us to go on and not to give up.
