Family Prayer Reminders

NOTE: I ran into the friend I wrote about in this blog from 2008 so I thought I’d run it again for you today.

Promoting Family Prayer

I thought I’d share with you a project that I finally finished yesterday after having the idea at a Hearts at Home conference last fall.

I was browsing some sales booths and happened upon one that gave all kinds of ideas about praying for the members of your family. I am always looking for ideas on prayer because I would not categorize myself as a prayer warrior, but more of a prayer wimp! I struggle with making time for prayer and working it into my day, so I am always up for new ideas.

On the way home, my friend Janee and I decided we would try to go home and make some of the ideas ourselves. (Actually, I combined two ideas I saw and added a new twist.)

Being severely craft-challenged and allergic to glue guns, I was not sure if my good intentions would come to fruition. However, yesterday afternoon, I actually completed my project.

Here is the concept:

I bought a ceramic tray, votive holders, rub on letters, some tea light candles and a bag of smooth stones.

I transferred the names of each member of our family onto the votive holders. Then I wrote the names of our family members on several rocks-about two or three rocks for each person.

When anyone in our family wants to let someone else know that they are praying for them that day, they light their candle. Then, to remind them to pray, they take a stone with that person’s name on it and place it in their pocket.

Throughout the day, whenever they feel the stone, they are reminded to pray. If you see that your candle has been lit, you blow it out. (Didn’t want this creative family activity to cause a house fire!!)

A simple idea and concept, but I am hoping it will draw us closer as a family.

  1. I love this idea, Karen. Even though our nest is empty at this point, I think we could still do this or some form of it and at least our kids would know that their dad and I are praying for them daily and for each other. Love it!!!

  2. Karen, awesome idea to encourage prayer for family members and for family members to be encouraged knowing they are being prayed for. Thank you for sharing.

    Blessings on your day today,
    Jodie
