Marriage is hard. So very hard. As in he-drives-me-so-crazy-it-makes-my-head-explode hard.

Can I get an “Amen”?

And sometimes, marriage is even more laden with serious problems than that. Infidelity. Neglect. Abuse.

Hard stuff.

My husband and I have walked through tough marriage situations such as these with many couples. Some sadly ended in divorce, no matter how much one of the spouses didn’t want it to. You see, it takes two people to make a marriage work. Unfortunately, it only takes one to break it up.

Other couples we’ve known have been able to forgive, reconcile, and rebuild their broken marriage, again because both were willing to do so.

In the past year I have had five different friends each come out with a helpful and honest marriage book. Some are just encouraging and helpful and some are for the marriage in trouble. I thought this week was a great time to tell you about all of them! Affiliate links may be included, I only recommend books I love that bring value to my readers.

Rebuilding a Marriage Better Than New by Cindy Beall. Cindy’s marriage took quite a hit when she discovered that not only had her husband been unfaithful, but the woman was pregnant with his child. I heard Cindy speak at an event where we were both keynotes. I cried my fool head off. Not because of the tragic tale but because of the miraculous way God rebuilt her marriage. Seriously. I can’t stop smiling every time I spy a pic of Cindy and her husband and their boys on Instagram. This book is a great tool for healing and hope.

No More Perfect Marriages; Experience the Freedom of Being Real Together by Mark and Jill Savage. The Savages have been friends of ours for over 20 years. We’ve seen them in ministry with spouses and parents and we’ve seen their marriage survive and affair five years ago that sent us to our knees begging God for redemption and reconciliation. After wearing out the knees on my jeans, we saw their marriage restored. In this book they speak honestly about their struggles, how they came back from betrayal, and the principles keeping their marriage strong today.

  1. Hi Karen! I would LOVE to win Rebuilding Marriage Better then New. Restoring our relationship and hope have been at the top of my prayer list latley. I love reading and recently have gotten into a couple different books from Ellen White, which are amazing. But dosnt have much to do with marriage and my personal relationship with my husband. With him currently in jail and me home w our small children books have been my time to keep my mind busy while the kids are asleep and im alone. I have been searching for a good book on relationships and I dont know where to start when looking for the ‘right one’ to read. It would be a blessing to win and feel like im not the only one with troubles and are able to make it thru!!!

  2. This is long but please read— I would really love a copy of Rebuilding a Marriage Better Than New. I have been with my husband for five years. Throughout this time I have dealt with his two year relapse with Percocet— it completely broke us as partners. Bills were constantly unpaid (I remember being on the phone crying begging the water company to please help me make a payment plan) because he (as the main breadwinner) spent everything he had on pills. We have a three year old daughter and things have gotten so out of control that she has spent a year and a half of her life away from him as we had to leave and go home to my parents for safety reasons. In those dark years a restraining order was filed and the state pressed charges against him for domestic violence. And then on top of that all he was unfaithful while on pills. While away I prayed every day for my marriage and healing for us both. By the grace of God my husband finally realized that he needed help and was about to lose his family permanently. He admitted to his doctor he had an addiction, and also saw a psychiatrist to get treated for bipolar disorder and ADHD along with his addiction and we have been working on rebuilding our relationship… but it has been a struggle, especially since some behaviors and disregard toward me have become habit for him, and I have been struggling with resentment and anxiety.

  3. Our only son is a newlywed so we are now empty-nesters. The 14-Day Romance Challenge could really help us reunite and reignite our marriage in this new season.

  5. I would like the “For Better or For Kids” because I have recognized fear has been taking the wheel in my parenting and affecting my marriage because of choices I feel are best and my husband hasn’t necessarily agreed with but has supported me through. I don’t want the fear of ruining my chidren to take a toll on my marriage or on our relationship; especially because we became parents at 19 & 20. It’s been hard to balance fun in our relationship along with the serious job of parenting. Thank you!

  7. I’d love to win a copy of For better or For Kids. Having 4 small children, it is hard to put our couple relationship as the top priority. Managing the kids and all their activities while trying to keep the house looking decent leaves us weary and too tired to put our main focus on each other.

    1. Congrats Jen, you won For Better of For Kids. Thank you for sending your mailing address. Enjoy!

  8. I would love to read for better or for kids. My husband has two teenage daughters from a previous marriage and now we have added two more littles – two under two. So often we find that between the drama of the broken home and the exhaustion of meeting the needs of two babies, there is little left for us to be us. Any tools Ruth and her husband could share would be so very appreciated

  9. I’d love to get For Better or For Kids and the reason why is that this book has come across my path a few times recently and speaks to a current struggle of mine. ?

  10. For Better OR For Kids. A mother of a great husband and 2 amazing children (1 year old this coming week and a 4 year old next month). Marriage is very important to me and it is sometimes a struggle. There are great times and there are tough times where you just want to give up. But giving up is not an option I want to give myself. Not only a happy marriage for me and my husband but for my kids. Today the big “D” (divorce) word is so common it is scary. I want to show my kids that even when times are tough that you can get threw it and work at it and when two people work together it will be ok. I grew up with my parents married for 20 some years and then in high school my dad gave up on my mom and us 3 kids (me and 2 sisters). It was such a struggle for me I wanted that family that stayed together. Giving it all is sometimes so hard when you spend all day (Mostly a stay at home mom) with the kids. I want all the advice I can on how to parent and how to love. A healthy loving marriage is one of the greatest gifts I can show my child.
