Ahhhh…the kitchen. It’s probably the place we spend most of our time. It just seems to be the family gathering place. Whether we are eating or just hanging out, it’s our “zone”. It’s where we connect to catch up on everyone’s different schedules. It’s where we find out how each of our days went. It’s even where we have those serious talks that keep us up until the wee hours of the morning. And of course, it’s the first place I go in the morning as I follow the smell of the freshly brewed coffee lingering in the air.

I realized shortly after we moved in to our new home that our “place” wasn’t all that inviting. It may sound funny that you would want to make your kitchen feel cozier, but a kitchen is often the focal point in your home. It’s even where we spend most of our time when hosting our home group from church!

So today I just want to show you what we’ve done in our kitchen to give it that more inviting feel for all our family and friends.

1. Define Your Space – When we first moved in, I was excited about that fact that we were starting from scratch. I was determined to be a minimalist when it came to decorating.  I wanted everything to feel clean and crisp. So I left all of the space above my cabinets empty. That lasted about 3 months. I just had to put my “fingerprint” on the room!

I literally decided this on a whim one day as I stopped into Hobby Lobby to pick up ONE thing. I ended up leaving with a cart full of goodies to decorate the lonely space in my kitchen. After digging through decorations that were still in boxes in my basement, and the few deals I was able to find on my shopping trip, I came up with this:

See what deals you can find on clearance, at resales shops, or at yard sales to help make your kitchen a little more cozy and cute.

2. Add a Backsplash – I knew that someday I wanted to add a backsplash to our kitchen. But I also knew that I would have to be patient and wait until we had the money to do so.  Although my husband has many talents, tile work it not one of them!  I knew this wasn’t an area we could do ourselves.  However, if your hubby (or you!) has this skill, it will save you a LOT of money and you can probably do it for the half the cost. This is a great way to show off your decorating personality.  I picked one that was different and unique. But a lot of people love the classic subway tile. You can’t pick wrong!  Just go with what YOU like. You won’t regret it!

3. Treat Yourself to Fresh Flowers – Having a bouquet of fresh flowers in the kitchen seriously makes me giddy. I don’t know if it’s just the pop of color or that is just makes me feel special, but I love when I think to pick up a bunch of flowers. And you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg! Trader Joe’s has bundles for $3.99!

Remember, everyone has different ideas on what makes them comfortable. My kitchen may not feel as warm as inviting as you are wanting. The best part of decorating is doing what you like and what makes you happy. After all, it is YOUR home!

Blessings!

Nikki

Friends, as a young mom over two decades ago, I read a book by Edith Schaeffer, wife of the the late theologian Francis Schaeffer, called The Hidden Art of Homemaking. I’m planning to re-read this book in June, something I try to do once a year. To say that this book changed my life would be a gross understatement. It taught me to see my daily life in my home not as boring and ordinary, but as an opportunity to see God in the little things as I love and serve my family, along with anyone else who enters our four walls. I pray it does the same for you. ~ Karen
