Day 9 of 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways (with Sharon Glasgow)

Winners announced here! Congratulations!

*Give Away has Ended*

It’s Day 9 of 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways!

If you’re just joining in, start at Day One here.

11th Annual 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways (2018) December 4-15 at karenehman.com.

My guest for day none is my friend and fellow Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker Sharon Glasgow. Sharon and I have been close friends for over a decade. When she isn’t busy teaching the Bible, spending time with her husband, one of her five daughters, or many grandkids, you just might find her milking a goat or putting on a wedding in her barn. She is a wealth of ideas for making a house a home. Today she is sharing a simply beautiful idea with us. Here’s Sharon…

I love a tree filled with homemade Christmas ornaments. It’s nostalgic, warm, personal and brings back memories of the good ole days years later. Making them is a great  family tradition. It’s inexpensive and so easy to do.

Dried Fruit Christmas Ornaments

Ingredients needed: fruit, craft varnish, thread

You should start small and work your way up. Just try one grapefruit, orange and apple to begin with and see how you like it.

Directions:

I sliced the fruit thin and threw away the ends. Only the center pieces of the apples and pears turn out perfect looking. Some people blanch the fruit before dehydrating it–I tried it, but didn’t notice it being any better than the ones I didn’t blanch. I put all sliced fruit on cookie sheets and then into the oven on 175 degrees. I put parchment paper on a few of the cookie sheets but didn’t notice any difference in outcome.

Flip the fruit once while they are in oven. It will take about 7 hours for them to dehydrate properly in the oven.

Use clear craft varnish or decoupage to lightly cover the dried fruit. After dry, flip over and do the other side.

Let dry. Poke holes through for the string.

If you have a light behind the fruit ornaments at night, they are beautiful like stained glass.

Now, have you ever tried your hand at making homemade ornaments? Or, is there a special homemade ornament that you treasure? Tell us about it in the comments section to be entered to win my giveaway.

Merry Christmas,

Sharon

  1. I would have never thought to do anything like this. Interesting! I have collected Mickey Mouse since I was a young girl so my tree is covered in Disney ornaments (mostly Mickey). Some I have had for a long time and I usually get a new one or two each year but I also let my kids put up a tree that has all of their handmade ornaments through the years. I adore it! Precious memories in each one!! ??

  6. My favorite of our “home” made (most were actually made at school or at church) is the ones that are hand prints of my two children. My mind is brought back to the days when my children were small and so innocent. And each of the others bring me back to other times and past Christmases.

  7. So nice! I enjoy the ornaments my kids have made at school and we decorate our tree with all toy like ornaments! Every time I put up the tree love remembering where the did them

  8. I’ve actually done this my parents when I was a kid! One year we made ALL the ornaments on the tree! My parents bought glass ball ornaments and we used my Mom’s craft paint to pour inside all different colors and make our own swirled ornaments! I loved it and still today those are my favorite ornaments because of the memory of making them together!!

  9. We make ornaments every year. Everything from cinnamon and glue ‘cookies’ to reindeer made from thread spools with pine garland antlers. My favorite though have to be the wax paper and melted crayon ‘stained glass windows’ my now 20 and 22 year old-kids made when they were small. Somehow they have survived and still make it onto the tree.

  10. My sister is amazing… She has made a homemade Christmas ornament for her nieces and nephews every year! We all look forward to seeing this year’s ornament!! I like to share homemade jam or a sewn gift with family and friends!

  11. I have never thought of or seen dried fruit ornaments but they are beautiful and I will have to give it a try. I do treasure my kids school made ornaments and we add a few to our tree each year!

  12. This is a fun idea! I like finding new and different homemade ornament ideas to make with my older daughters and my high school girls group. Thanks!

  13. We made homemade ornaments with our kids a couple years ago. We did specific shapes then let them put their names on the back so we could remember who’s was who’s and finished them off with glitter so they have a beautiful shimmer to them!
